Air sealing
The holes the blanket misses
Insulation slows heat. It does not stop air. The top plates, the can lights, the chimney chase, and the wires through the ceiling are holes. Warm air you paid for leaves through them, and a new blanket on top of those holes is a waste.
Before the blow
On an attic recharge, sealing comes first. We foam or caulk the big leaks, box the cans that are not rated to be buried, and dam the chase so the fill stays out of it. Then we blow. Skipping the seal is how a thick attic still drafts.
When it is the whole job
Some attics are already deep and the bill is still high. The hatch tells us. If the depth is there and the air is not, we seal and we leave the fill alone. Walls, rims, and the floor over a garage leak too. Those get sealed when they are the hole, not because every house needs every hole filled.
- Top plates, wire penetrations, and the attic hatch itself.
- Can lights and chases, so the blow does not bury a fire hazard.
- Rim joists, often with foam, because a batt never seals that band.
