Basement walls and crawls
Foam board is a rigid sheet. It goes on basement concrete and crawl walls, where a batt would get wet and a blow has nothing to hang in. It is a flat layer, not a fluffy one.
Where it belongs
A basement wall that is about to be finished, or one that just needs to stop sweating. The sheet goes against the concrete, seams taped, then the framing if there is framing. The R-value is in the continuous layer, not in a batt stuffed against a cold wall.
Crawl walls get the same idea when foam in place is more than the wall needs and a soft fill would sag.
What it is not
It is not an attic blanket and it is not a radiant barrier. A sheet on a roof deck does not replace the insulation on the ceiling. We use it where the surface is flat and the other products fail.
- Basement concrete before or instead of a stud wall.
- Crawl walls that want a rigid skin.
- Seams taped. An untaped sheet is a draft with an R-value printed on it.
