Spray foam insulation
Rims, crawls, cathedral ceilings
Spray foam is the product for assemblies that have no place to set a blanket. It costs more than a blow. It earns it on rim joists, crawl walls, cathedral ceilings, and bonus rooms over garages.

Open-cell or closed-cell
Open-cell is lighter and it is the usual fill for a roof or a wall cavity that needs to be full. Closed-cell is denser, it resists water, and it is what we put on a rim joist or a crawl wall that sees moisture.
Neither one is the default attic. A vented attic with a ceiling to cover is still a blow, after the holes are sealed. Foam on that ceiling is how people buy an expensive job they did not need.
The jobs it actually wins
Foam goes where loose-fill would fall out or where there is no cavity to fill.
- Rim joists in the basement, the band between the foundation and the floor.
- Crawl walls that are concrete or stone and stay damp.
- Cathedral ceilings and roofs with no attic to blow.
- The floor of a bonus room over a garage, when the bays are too broken for a clean roll.
